YouTube Content ID Explained
Content ID is YouTube's system for identifying audio in uploaded videos. It matches the audio in a video against the platform's reference database, and then applies the rights owner's decision.
The system identifies audio by matching the audio fingerprint. When a video contains a sound that is in the reference database, Content ID applies the rights owner's chosen outcome.
A rights owner can choose three outcomes: claim the audio for monetisation, block the video, or track the viewer's country. The choice is made by the rights owner, not by the platform.
For an artist, the practical understanding is that they own the rights in the recordings they make. The rights should be documented in the metadata and in the contract. If the rights are not documented, the content claim may not apply.
The most useful part of Content ID for an artist is the ability to track where their music is being used, and to make sure the rights are set up the way they should be.
