UPC in Music: What It Is and Why It Matters
A UPC is a product identifier. It identifies a specific release unit, such as an album sold as a physical product or as a digital product.
An ISRC identifies a recording. A UPC identifies the product unit. The two identifiers are needed for complete release documentation.
A label should assign a UPC for each release that will be sold as a product. The UPC is recorded in the metadata so the platform can identify the product unit correctly.
The most useful practice is to assign both identifiers before the release ships: ISRCs for every track, and a UPC for the product unit. This makes the release clear to every service and correct for royalty reporting.
