Music Rights Management

Music rights management is the process of making sure the rights in a release are documented, assigned, and communicated correctly.

A release should clearly state who owns the master, who owns the publishing, and who is credited on the recording. If a producer, a songwriter, or a label is involved, the arrangement should be written down.

Interpretation is the biggest risk in rights. Two artists can use the same title without infringing. A producer can own a master without owning the composition. The safest approach is to document who owns what, and to do it before the release ships.

Rights management also covers the documents themselves: the release notes, the label credit, the copyright notice, and the metadata. Those documents travel with the release and should stay consistent across every platform.

The most useful habit is a pre-ship rights check. It takes minutes, and it prevents the dispute that would take months to resolve.
