Label Partnerships Explained
A label partnership is a working relationship between two organisations that supports the release of music. It is not a one-way arrangement where one side gives and the other receives. It is a shared agreement about what each side brings and what each side controls.
The key to a good partnership is the written agreement. It states the release windows, the territories, the revenue streams, the handling fees, and the advance terms before the first song is recorded. It also states who owns which rights, who controls the metadata, and who makes the final decisions on what is released.
A strong partnership keeps the artist in control of what is theirs. Master, artwork, lyrics and live performance rights belong to the artist unless there is a separate written agreement. The partner's job is to make sure those rights do not leak into a slot that is not theirs.
Label partnerships are most useful when both sides have something to give. The label brings the roster and the distribution muscle. The partner brings the rights, the metadata, and the infrastructure. When both sides know their cut before the first song is recorded, the partnership works.
