Independent Music Distribution in India
Independent music distribution in India has become practical because the platforms are accessible, the delivery tooling is straightforward, and the market is broad. An independent artist or label can publish a release on Spotify, Apple Music, JioSaavn, Amazon Music, YouTube Music and more without a label.
The Indian market is a collection of regions rather than one market. Telugu, Kannada and Tamil film industries, Hindi indie, regional folk, pop and independent scenes all have different distribution needs. A release that works for one genre may need different packaging, different credits, and different rights handling than another.
Independent distribution works when the metadata is correct, the artwork is complete, and the release date is planned around the artist's own schedule. A release is not a one-off event. It is part of a catalog.
For Indian artists, the practical steps are the same as anywhere else: assemble the masters, write the metadata, verify the artwork, assign identifiers, and deploy. The difference is the local context: how the music will be found, which languages it will be found in, and which playlists and services matter most in those regions.
