Independent Artists and Scores
Independent artists sometimes work with scores, session musicians, and publishers. The practical understanding is what the artist owns, and what the publisher owns.
A score is a written representation of the music. The composer owns the rights to the music. The publisher handles the administration of the rights.
The most useful understanding is that the artist owns the recording, and the composer owns the composition. When those two are separated, the contract should say so.
