Digital Music Distribution Explained

Digital music distribution is the process of delivering a release to the platforms where listeners expect to find it. It is sometimes called streaming distribution or online distribution.

What distribution does: it delivers the master, artwork, metadata and rights documentation to the platforms, so the release becomes available, searchable, and playable.

What distribution does not do: it does not guarantee streams, it does not run playlists, and it does not market the release. Those are separate parts of the business. Distribution is delivery, not promotion.

The key audience for distribution is the platform itself. Platforms index releases based on the metadata and the master file. If the metadata is wrong, the release will be wrong.

How distribution should be planned: distribution should be the first step of the release plan, not the last. The release date, the metadata, the artwork, the rights, and the reporting all belong to the same workflow.

A clean distribution pipeline is the foundation that a marketing plan sits on. A release that is delivered late, or with incorrect metadata, will still be found and corrected. The question is whether the delay causes the artist to miss a window.
